Songs About Chicago

I started collecting songs and other audio tracks that were about, or made reference to, Chicago 19 years ago. Chicago was the first big city I ever lived in (or rather “near”, not “in”) and this was probably the main reason I started this. By the time my “collection” numbered around six items I thought that it had almost reached the top, except for those couple of hard-to-get tracks that were still stubbornly sitting on my list… Little did I know!

I have carried out this collecting habit of mine with varying levels of intensity all this time, from a nirvana of absolute apathy to sudden rushes of “Chicago frenzy" when triggered by the right stimuli. Having decided that I am probably not going to become a DJ after-all (a temporary job seemed enough to satisfy my curiosity) didn’t really help a lot, but I kept on collecting nonetheless. So, my slowly- yet ever-expanding collection lay dormant until a few days ago, when I came across this list of basik with “Songs about Berlin”. One of the songs (unknown to me) included both Berlin and Chicago in its title, so as one thing led to another I decided it was time to do something with that list of mine.

I went through my Excel files and paper lists concerning my CDs / LPs and cassettes and came up with about 45 tracks that have references to Chicago, direct or indirect, in the title or in the lyrics. Then, I did several Google searches, mixing and matching terms and guessing and re-searching. I cross-checked this all with the results from Wikipedia (which really has a much, much shorter list than mine :) (Update: I found out it also has a 2nd bigger one, which was helpful, but still...) and some other lists by Chicago locals and institutions and came up with another 70 tracks or so. And just when I thought I was finished, hell broke loose…!
So, even though a complete list seems impossible to me (for one thing, new songs keep coming out every day…) this one is the best you’ll find anywhere on the net and I’d appreciate it if you helped me expand it even more by pointing out further tracks for inclusion. Song covers are included only as an indication of some songs popularity.

At the bottom, I have also included some mini-lists with bands, albums and album-covers related to Chicago. Upon further thought, I have excluded some songs that artists say are written about life in Chicago but which provide no such concrete clue. These songs have been put in the “Unclear” list. After all, every song is written with some place in mind (I guess) but the main list only has tracks that make a clear reference to the city or one of its landmarks / historical events / personalities / teams, etc. So, to make a long story short, here is...
